The Turkey Hunt

Merriam’s Turkeys in South Dakota

Spring on the South Dakota prairie brings an entirely different kind of hunt. Virgin Creek Outfitters guides turkey hunters through the open prairie, creek drainages and wooded corridors of Western South Dakota, chasing Merriam’s turkeys in country where birds can cover tremendous amounts of ground.

West of the Missouri River, suitable turkey habitat is primarily tied to Merriam’s wild turkeys. These birds readily use prairie landscapes wherever there is adequate roosting, grassland and foraging habitat.

This is an active spring hunt built around finding birds, reading where they are moving and getting into position when a mature gobbler decides to work.

A Two-Bird Hunt

Three Days to Hunt

This package is built as a 3-day, 2-bird hunt, giving hunters the chance to spend multiple days chasing South Dakota gobblers. Depending on bird movement and conditions, hunts can involve:

  • Locating birds from strategic listening points
  • Calling and working vocal gobblers
  • Setting up along travel corridors
  • Hunting creek and river-bottom habitat
  • Moving to stay ahead of active birds
  • Using the terrain to close distance on reluctant toms

Some mornings begin with gobbles echoing across the prairie. Others require covering country until we find birds willing to cooperate. That is turkey hunting.
